Year 1

Year One Term Four

Welcome to Term Four in our Year One class. We have been so busy having fun this term, that we sometimes forget we are actually learning new things. In investigations we always have fun, while we learn.

Term Three Year One

We are off racing in year one this term. In the first few weeks we learnt about language to direct people and we had a pirate sneak into our class and leave us a treasure map. We followed all the directions accurately and found our treasure, a chest full of popcorn, YUM YUM!!

Year 1 Term 2 Update

Well here we are, half way through term two and we have been so busy learning and having fun.

English

During English we have been writing our own fairy tales. We learnt how to write a good story and then used our imaginations to invent wonderful made up characters for our fairy tales. We are now reading some new stories, called realistic fiction. These stories are made up but could happen to people in real life. Keep an eye out for our budding year one authors!!

Mathematics

In Maths we have been studying two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects. While we were exploring these objects we discovered that the faces of three dimensional objects are made up of two dimensional shapes. We have also learnt to classify them and have found lots of rectangular prisms in our environment. Over the last few weeks we have been playing lots of games to partition two digit numbers, using tens and ones.

Religion

In Religion we have read some Bible stories that show how Jesus was a caring person. We have been role playing and drawing different ways we can care for others, just as Jesus did. We have also had fun using our senses and wondering at the special body God gave us.

Kath Walker

We do Walker Learning Investigations on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. These are exciting days for us to make wonderful discoveries using lots of interesting objects. We have two ‘focus children’ each day who get to share their discoveries and creations with the rest of the class. The photographer and the reporter have fun tasks to complete each session and they share their knowledge with us all. Some of the many learning experiences we have had are making monsters out of playdoh, taking apart objects on our tinkering table, writing story books and role playing in our class bakery.

Year One Term 1

WOW what a start to Year One!! Within the first few weeks we all had swimming lessons and we received a free lesson every day on what a river looks like when it floods. It was amazing to see how quickly the water rose up and then how quickly it disappeared again. It was fantastic to hear all the theories the children had about why the water rose so quickly and when it would stop.

Once swimming finished we got stuck into our school work. We learnt some new spelling sounds and wrote a recount about making jelly and going to swimming lessons. We are still practising our recount writing and most of us now know to include who, what, where, when and why in our writing. During the last few weeks we have been reading narratives and learning about what makes a good narrative. Towards the end of term one and the beginning of term two we will be writing our own narratives.

In math we have looked at teen numbers and then moved onto our ‘Friends of 10.” Friends of ten are two numbers that ad together to equal ten. We have also been counting collections by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and we have found it is so much quicker to count like this when you have a large collection.

In religion we have talked about the wonderful gifts of imagination and choice which God has given us. We have used these gifts in class to role play smart choices and create fantastic things in investigation time. During the weeks leading up to Easter we have been talking about new life and how Jesus is risen.

Year 1 has been exciting and busy this term so we are all looking forward to a little break over the holidays to re-charge our batteries. Catch you all in term two.
